Alessio Martinelli fell from his bicycle on Tuesday, May 27 while making a turn on the wet streets of San Valentino, Italy during the race, as seen in a video shared onXby reporter René Bugner. After crashing on his bike, Martinelli, 24, appeared to slide down the street and fall over a ravine, which reportedly has a 30- to 50-foot drop. The edge of the street had a railing to shield the drop, but Martinelli slid underneath and down the hill. The Giro d'Italia official X accountconfirmedit was Martinelli who was involved in the crash and said "ambulances and the medical teams are by his side," shortly after it happened. His team, VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè, provided updates on X following the incident. "Martinelli, victim of a fall, was taken to the hospital. He is currently conscious, and his condition is stable," the team said.
